After asking a number of my peers who are in their twenties what their dream job might be l was shocked to receive that answer that they would rather work in a casino because and l quote “all the excitement and money what is better than that.” So very few of you may be not be surprised at how much they laughed at my face for suggesting librarianship. This blog gives me a chance to fully defend my answer by showing the more exciting side of librarianship.
Recently reading through the other blogs l have discovered that librarianship is diverse and there are so many careers one can pursue in librarianship. There are adventurous careers like being a cruise ship librarian travelling on the salty waters and meeting new and diverse people every trip. it also gives an opportunity for the librarian to learn new languages and can you imagine the kind of stories there are able to tell their friends and family. I personally would not mind getting a chance to be a cruise ship librarian.
We have the book bus librarians who travel across cities seeing the world again and getting to experience new environments. This kind of librarianship is not for me because l get heavily car sick but l think it will be a great opportunity for those who still want to travel but are not willing to go to far from home.
I have always admired research librarians. Just imagining the kind of information they can share from the top of their heads has always been an inspiration tome. I love being a Know-it-all but that title should go to the research librarians who get the chance to share their knowledge.
So again l ask what is better librarianship or gambling. Gambling might give you joy for a short-lived time while librarianship will give you a chance to enjoy travelling while getting a steady pay. Very few old people work at the casinos the older you get the higher the risk of you getting fired from your job which does not occur in libraries. And if nothing at all has convinced you just think of the health benefits and your pension fund waiting for you.
This blog is directed to all those people who think librarianship is boring to rethink again because very few careers give you a chance to take your whole office and the staff on the road so that you can work as you admire the scenery.
The age of information that is what this century has been termed. Ironically the people who deal most with information the librarians are facing a high rate of unemployment. Everywhere librarians go the centres are fully staffed with unqualified people who feel too threatened by today’s librarians to give them a chance.
The requirements to become a librarian are now out of this world “5 years experience, must be from an ALA accredited university” when you meet all these requirements the people in charge feel threatened and make sure that you are never given a chance. So in the end people in charge a re not qualified and are too afraid of changes to modern ways. This is why librarianship as a profession ends up being a laughing stock leading to people mocking this noble profession.
It seems librarians have the crab mentality that as soon as they see other fellow librarians succeeding the y rush to pull each other down. Other professions have become popular among the society not because they do great thing but because they hire the best and can adjust to change. This way new ideas which are suited to the society are produced and realised bringing glory to the profession.
However due to the crab mentality which is common among librarians of our age our profession we shall never get the respect we deserve. As librarians l want us to ask ourselves this question when will l stop defending my profession to the rest of the world? Am l willing to do my best to make this profession recognised?
Three people walk into a club a librarian a pastor and a drunk……… that’s how there always start these jokes.
I don,t know about libraries all over the world but l think librarianship is the new place where laggards and haters of technology hang around. Libraries don’t want to embrace the pride found in other professions. We do not want to upgrade our areas and profession we are content being the subjects of sick perverted jokes and as threats to kids that if you fail you are might end up stuck as a librarian.
We need to glam up our profession and make it cool and hip. We should be the go to guys for everything cool and hip in technology. We the librarians should be the ones spotted with newest and flashiest gadgets have the answers about blogging and communication instead of being associated with only books and out of date clothes.
Whenever l see new gadgets being produced l always try to think of the ways that they can be used in the library instead of relying on the same old machine which were used by our ancestors.
However l do not encourage libraries to go to the extreme and change themselves to a gaming centre just so that they can be seen as hip. We do not need to open vending machine and buy the latest games to be seen as cool we just need to adapt the technology which is available to make our work easier.
Wow my first day at work was so not what l expected. You hear stories of people who get so overworked they simple fall into bed and we all think that is the norm. In reality the first day at work is like the first day at school looking around with wide eyes as you try to find and asses your position within the hierarchy. Will you be the popular one the name your boss will remember at the end of the day or are you the mousey one who everyone constantly asks the name because it is too complicated to remember and no one really seems to care.
So my first day at work was the worst. I am not a people pleaser by nature l am the type that sits by the corner and makes sarcastic remarks about everyone. So for once l had to bite my tongue smile and laugh all day long so exhausting. But working in a library is a very exciting adventure for me you never know who you will meet and what that will say so it brings a different kind of excitement in my life. My first day in the library opened my eyes to another world l never knew existed and cannot wait to explore.
